A History Of Geographic Nomenclature

The Etymology and Legacy of Turkey's Name

A History of Geographic Nomenclature

The name "Turkey" first emerged in Western sources sometime after the late 11th century. It was initially used to refer to the Seljuk-controlled lands in Anatolia, which later became the heartland of the Ottoman Empire. The term originated from the Old French word "Turquie," derived from the Latin "Turcia." These words, in turn, were derived from the Persian word "Turk," meaning "powerful" or "strong."
